Christoph will soon assume duty as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CUHK and later as Visiting Research Fellow at the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore.  Abstract:

Being among the most striking phenomena in Chinese state-society relations, the growing number and scale of popular protests over the last two decades has attracted a great deal of scholarly and public attention. This talk will review major trends in Chinese popular contention over the last two decades. By examining relevant elite discourse over the same period of time it will then look into the interrelations between rising popular activism, evolving elite discourse, and a transforming public sphere. Based on this assessment the following questions pertaining to Chinese contentious politics will be addressed: how can we explain the unabated expansion of grassroots activism? How has the Chinese leadership responded to rising popular unrest? How, if at all, has popular contention contributed to the evolution of the Chinese political re-gime?
