Noël Dutrait is Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at the University of Aix-Marseille and director of the University’s Institute for Research on Asia (IrAsia). Specialized in the study of Chinese contemporary literature, he has translated various Chinese writers’ works into French, including A Cheng, Su Tong, Han Shaogong, Gao Xingjian, and Mo Yan. He has also published several articles about the particularities of translating contemporary Chinese literature.

Abstract:

Twelve years after Gao Xingjian, another Chinese-language writer, Mo Yan, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Both writers were born and grew up in communist China. Each has his own approach (using hallucinatory realism and flow of language) to approach a reality described in its beauty as well as in its rawest ugliness.

We will attempt to show that the two writers, although with very different social backgrounds and life experience, share commonalities when it comes to the description of this reality in their fiction works.
