► Analysis Report ten years after Hong Kong’s Handover Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council. The article is presentated by the ministery of internal affairs in Taiwan, which deals with the island’s relationship with the mainland. It assesses the past ten years following Hong Kong’s handover and the weakness of the “one country, two systems� concept.  ► Hong Kong: Ten years on and no Improvement in sight (IHLO) International Trade Union Hong Kong Liaison Office report. This contribution focuses on the increasing inequality between rich and poor population after the handover, the unsatisfactory progress in working conditions and labour laws, and finally the impact of the slow process towards democratization. CHAN Anson, Hong Kong Journal January 2007 Anson Chan’s contribution, coming from the former head of Hong Kong’s administration, deals with the slow evolution of Hong Kong’s plans to implement democracy. Her report gives deeper insight into the main reasons of the delays and the population's attitude towards a democratic Hong Kong. She concludes that the end of process towards democracy is still not in sight. The analysis of the chief executive election in 2007 reveals, as this report concludes, a spreading oligarchy in the domestic politics in Hong Kong and a growing Chinese influence. But it also marks the aspiration of Hong Kong’s population firstly to a democratic evolution and secondly to a greater separation between political and economic power. ► Hong Kong’s return to Chinese Sovereignty: Ten years on As anticipated the AI report presents the ten years after the handover from the human rights point of view. It approches among others the liberty of expression, protection of minorities, the independence of law. CHING Frank, Hong Kong Journal Frank Ching addresses the question of the success of the “one country, two systems� policy. Though it is widely accepted as the best model for the SAR and China, for example by the USA or Great Britain,  one should distinguish between the economy and policy objectives. In this respect it would be useful to implement a rating of the ten years after retrosession. MARTIN Michael, CRS Report for Congress Michael Martin's article points out the characteristics of Hong Kong society: its political development, the birth of political parties, the defence of civil liberties and the rule of law, and the development in the fields of economy, society and culture. The analyisis includes a discussion of Hong Kong’s relationship with the USA.  International Monetary Fund The FMI analyse the economy situation in Hong Kong from different perspectives, the main aspects of the financial domestic troubles in the SAR, but also the methods to upgrade the market’s competition. In a last point it focuses on the differences between the economic situation in China and the SAR. |
