The French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC), founded in 199, is a publicly financed research institute, based in Hong Kong. It aims at studying political, economic and social developments of the Chinese world (People's Republic of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau). The CEFC is part of the network of French research centres abroad, which are administred by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Five researchers, four PhD candidates and eight research fellows work at the CEFC.

A scientific board, composed of academics, convenes in Paris every year to decide of the CEFC's scientific policy.

The CEFC organises frequent seminars and conferences. It also publishes a quarterly Perspectives chinoises, which has an English edition, China Perspectives. These two journals are entirely devoted to the contemporary Chinese world on which they provide thorough socio-political, economic, cultural and literary analysis.

 

In 1994, the CEFC opened a branch in Taipei on the campus of the Academica Sinica (in Nankang). The branch receives research fellows and has close working ties with Taiwanese universities.
  The CEFC was founded by Michel Bonnin, who became its first director (1991-1998), followed by Jean-Pierre Cabestan (1998-2003)., Gilles Guiheux (2003-2006). Jean-François Huchet is currently the director.

  • Elisabeth Allès worked as a researchr at the CEFC from February 2002 to February 2004. She is now a researcher at the Research Center on Modern and Contemporary China (CNRS/EHESS) in Paris.en tant que chercheur CNRS.
  • Fiorella Allio was the director of the Taipei branch from November 1998 to February 2003. She is now a researcher at the South-East Asia Research Institute (CNRS-IRSEA) in Marseille.
  • Louis Augustin-Jean was a researcher at the CEFC from 1994 ro 1997.
  • Patricia Batto was the Chief Editor of Perspectives chinoises and China Perspectives from September 2003 to August 2006.
  • Nicolas Becquelin worked at the CEFC as a researcher from December 1997 to December 1999. He is now the director fo Human Rights Watch in Hong Kong.
  • Jean-Philippe Béja worked at the CEFC from August 1993 to August 1997. He is now a Senior researcher at the CERI (CNRS) in Paris.
  • Michel Bonnin was the first director of the CEFC from May 1991 to August 1998. He is now a Senior researcher at EHESS in Paris.
  • Jérôme Bourgon was a researcher at the CEFC from 1995 to 1996..
  • Jean-Pierre Cabestan was the director of the Taipei branch from July 1994 to August 1998. From September 1998 to August 2003 he was the director of the CEFC in Hong Kong. He is now director of the Political Sciences department at Baptist University, Hong Kong.
  • Philippe Chevalérias worked at the CEFC as a researcher from January 1997 to July 1999. He is now a lecturer at Lille University.
  • Leila Choukroune worked at the CEFC as a researcher from October 2000 to October 2002. She is now a lecturer at HEC Paris.
  • Stéphane Corcuff worked as a researcher at the CEFC from October 1994 to January 1996a travaillé au CEFC d'octobre 1994 à janvier 1996 en tant que chercheur MAE sous statut de coopérant affecté à l'Institut francais de Taipei, puis a l'antenne de Taipei de CEFC nouvellement créée. He is now lecturer in Chinese language and politics at La Rochelle University.
  • Samia Ferhat worked at the CEFC as a post-doctoral fellow from 1997 to 1997. She is now a lecturer at Paris 10- Nanterre University as well as associate researcher at the Research Centre on Modern and Contemporary China (EHESS/CNRS).
  • Martin Fournier was a researcher at the CEFC from September 2003 to August 2006. He is now a lecturer at Lyon 2 University as well as a researcher at GATE (Lyon).
  • Chloé Froissart worked at the CEFC as a PhD candidate from Sciences-Po Paris from September 2003 to February 2007. She is now a lecturer at the Chinese department of INALCO in Paris.Visit her web page.
  • François Gipouloux worked at the CEFC from September 1997 to December 2001 as a Senior researcher. He is now a Senior researcher at the Research Center on Modern and Contemporary China at EHESS (CNRS) in Paris.
  • Karine-Hinano Guérin worked at the CEFC as a researcher from January 2004 to October 2007
  • Gilles Guiheux worked at the CEFC as a researcher from 2001 to 2003 and then as Director from 2003 to September 2006. He is now a Senior lecturer at Paris 7 - Denis Diderot University.
  • Jean-François Huchet worked at the CEFC as a researcher from April 1997 to August 2001. He is now the Director of the CEFC.
  • Raphaël Jacquet worked at the CEFC from 1991 to 1998. He co-founded Perspectives chinoises and was its Chief Editor for eight years. He is now working at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he is the review editor.
  • Aurore Merle worked at the CEFC as a researcher from 2002 to 2006.
  • Laurent Michelon worked at the CEFC in Taipei from June 1997 to October 1998. He is now working at the French Institute in Taipei.
  • Pierre Miège worked at the CEFC from 1999 to 2001. He is now a researcher at Beijing Normal University.
  • Thi Minh-Hoang worked at the CEFC from September 2000 to September 2001. She is now a researcher at Waseda University.a travaillé au CEFC de septembre 2000 à septembre 2001 en tant qu'allocataire de recherche.
  • Véronique Poisson worked at the CEFC from November 1997 to December 1999..
  • Eric Sautedé worked at the CEFC in Hong Kongas a researcher from June 1994 to July 1996. From August 1996 to February 1999, he worked at CEFC Taipei and from September 1999 to August 2003 he worked at the CEFC in Hong Kong as a researcher and as Chief Editor of Perspectives chinoises. He is now Chief Editor of Chinese Cross Currents at the Ricci Institute in Macau.
