The following guidelines are provided to help contributors in presenting and formatting original articles or translations for China Perspectives. Please follow these rules as closely as possible. In case of doubt, you may refer to the Chicago Manual of Style (please note that China Perspectives uses the humanities style for quotations rather than the author date system). In all cases, it is strongly advised to proofread your manuscript several times before submitting it, and to use word-processing tools to eliminate double spaces, etc

I. Call for Papers China Perspectives 2008/3 : The City, Laboratory for the New China

The editors invite contributions for a special issue of China Perspectives/ Perspectives chinoises on “The City”.

China’s expanding urban centres concentrate many of the tensions and aspirations that define the country’s current evolution. They are a mirror of the social transformations it has undergone in recent years, showcasing both the newly “affluent” urban residents and the migrant workers who are instrumental in China ’s development. While urban authorities are eager to highlight cutting-edge architecture and “world class” modernity, town planning and environmental concerns sometimes lag behind the ideals of the “new socialist city”. What type of model do China’s cities represent in terms of economic development, social stability and environmental sustainability? How does this model allocate public space, and what are the political choices underlying this division? Contributors may explore the theme from any disciplinary angle, including sociological, historical, economic, political science, or literary and cinematographic.

Contributions should be between 5000 and 8000 words long and will be submitted for anonymous peer review as per usual procedure. The deadline for submissions is 1 July 2008. Prospective contributors should feel free to contact the editors before this date for any queries.

II. Type of articles

1. China Perspectives is a blind peer-reviewed scholarly journal advised by an editorial board, published by the CEFC (French Centre for Research on Contemporary China). 3. General submissions (other than for special theme issues) should be no longer than 8000 words, footnotes included.

4. All submissions are first reviewed internally by the editor. If appropriate, they are then sent to two anonymous external reviewers for evaluation.
