About the Roundtable

The quest for environmental protection in a wider context of finding the means to sustainable development has grown in strength over the past 40 years. Initially advocated by alternative anti-nuclear communities in Western consumerist societies, green political demands have now permeated countries all over the world, and the crafting and establishment of a “green and sustainable living” environment has become a claim by society as a whole, under every latitudes.
Policy initiatives on the side of governments have thus become necessities, and both Hong Kong and at a lesser degree Macao have had to follow through with their own initiatives, according to their own economic and political context. The key initiatives launched by responsible agencies on the two sides of the Pearl River Delta cover five policy areas involving sustainable development, namely air quality, waste management, nature conservation, low carbon living andsustainable community building. However, the strategies employed by the two governments have been criticized by some as pertaining to a weak sustainability approach, relying very much on market driven and technological means to achieve sustainability. Consequently, many questions are left pending. What are these policies and initiatives? How are they being developed? Are they being implemented effectively? What are the benefits of cooperation between the different political entities within the region? Should these five areas be placed at the core of a master plan in the development of both cities? These are but some of the questions that should be addressed during this interactive roundtable, the first in a series of discussion pertaining to public policies in Macao.

The roundtable will take place while breakfast is being served. English will be the medium of communication. Interested parties please make a booking, as there will be only be 50 seats available. Seats are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and booking is exclusively secured via email upon confirmation with the PR officer Cherry Cheong at [email protected] (no request will be accepted after 8th September).
